With wedding season approaching, the fashion store is full of a variety of Nehru jackets! Popularized by the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, these jackets are not only traditionally worn by men but have a political significance as well. He was not the only one public figure who wore these jackets but they got popular among the Western audience as he wore it infrequently while making public appearances!
Today, it is at one of the top positions in the list of global political fashion statements. Jawaharlal Nehru was among the first men to get featured in the Vogue magazine due to these jackets! The Indian politicians used style statement as an important political statement. It was this time when Nehru jackets entered the fashion industry and since then there is no looking back!
Nehru, being the first prime minister also laid the foundation for the political uniform- ‘The Nehru Jacket’. It is a decent and formal looking dress code which is perfect for politics. It has become popular to such an extent that almost every public figure has worn it at least once. Be it, Kiran Bedi or Narendra Modi, everybody loves this attire! There was a time when all the Congress supporters would have these jackets in their closet for sure. It was considered as a sign of support.

This jacket is a perfect combination of Indian traditional Sherwani and the western coats. After some years of getting featured in Vogue magazine, it also got featured on the cover page of Times magazine! This jacket has not only popular style statement in India but in foreign countries as well. For example, the former prime minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohammad is spotted wearing Nehru jackets quite a few times.
Recently, Narendra Modi has been spotted wearing these jackets on a regular basis, bringing them back into political fashion. During the visit of Narendra Modi to Australia, he was presented with a Nehru jacket made from wool by the Prime Minister of Australia.
In 2012, Nehru jackets were in the list of ‘Top 10 global political fashion statements’ published by Times magazine. Strong women like Kiran Bedi wore these jackets with elegance and showed that it is not just a ‘man thing’!
